A good food storage container can make all the difference when prepping meals or storing leftovers. While plastic containers are a solid option, glass food containers are the best choice for keeping food fresh.

Depending on the type of glass, many glass containers can even be used in the oven or freezer. The best glass type for food storage containers is borosilicate because it is very durable and designed to withstand harsh temperatures, making it ideal for reheating leftovers in the microwave, freezing foods, or even baking a dish in the oven.

“Make sure you get the most durable type of glass containers you can afford and always keep in mind what you will be using them for,” recommends Jason Goldstein, chef and founder of the recipe website Chop Happy. “When in doubt, get borosilicate glass so you can use it for everything.”

We put 12 different glass food storage containers to the test at home, using them to store and reheat food over the course of several weeks. We evaluated the performance, durability, design, and ease of cleaning each container to find the best options for keeping food fresh. For more information on how we tested glass food storage containers, check out our testing process below.

It includes nine containers with varying sizes and shapes to store a variety of food types.

The lids are plastic rather than glass.

The Pyrex Simply Store Glass Food Storage Container Set earned a perfect score in our tests for its lightweight-yet-sturdy design. We loved the variety of container sizes, which we used to reheat meals and store leftovers and fresh produce.

Since the containers are stackable and nestable, we were able to store the smaller containers in the larger ones to save space in our cabinet. The set includes several round and rectangular containers in different sizes so you can always find the perfect fit for your leftovers.

Made with tempered glass, the containers felt very sturdy without being too heavy. The lids, which are made with BPA-free plastic, sealed very securely and didn’t spill a single drop during our leak test.

When we used the containers in the microwave, our food heated evenly without making the container too hot to touch. The containers were also very easy to clean in the dishwasher, and food never got stuck in the grooves of the lid.

Each container has a tight seal that prevents leaks, so you can store liquids like soup or sauces.

You can’t nest containers of different sizes.

If you’re looking for a glass food container set that includes a variety of container sizes, we loved this option from Amazon Basics. The set includes 10 total containers with seven different sizes, making it easy to find the perfect fit for storing leftovers.

Each of the containers had a tight seal that prevented any water from escaping during our leak test, so we felt comfortable storing liquids in them, like soup and sauces. A silicone barrier between the lid and the container helps the containers seal tightly to keep food fresh longer. We think you could easily travel with the containers since the seal is secure and the glass is sturdy.

Made with borosilicate glass, the containers are extremely durable and made to withstand harsh temperatures. We were able to use them in the microwave and store food in the freezer without it becoming freezer burnt. The containers and lids are also dishwasher safe for easy cleaning.

Best of all, the container set is very affordable, especially for how many pieces it includes. The only downside to the set is that you can’t nest containers of different sizes, so they take up a bit more space in your cabinets.

Each container has three compartments to store different types of food without them touching.

They are made with untreated glass, so may not be as durable as other glass types.

We thought the Bayco Glass Meal Prep Container Set was ideal for meal prepping because each container has a divider that separates it into three compartments. Since the set includes eight identical containers, we could prepare a week’s worth of meals in the containers, and the dividers prevented different food types from touching each other.

With an airtight seal on each container, we found that our meal prep foods stayed fresh for several days at a time. The containers also passed the leak test with flying colors since no water escaped when we shook them vigorously. We even felt comfortable putting the containers in our work bag because the seal was secure.

The containers fit in the dishwasher nicely, making them easy to clean without taking up a ton of space. Each of the three compartments came out of the dishwasher clean.

Keep in mind that the containers are made with untreated glass, which is typically less durable than tempered or borosilicate glass. However, we still found the containers to be very sturdy during testing, and they didn’t even chip when we accidentally dropped them on a granite countertop.

The containers seal tightly to keep produce fresh for several days.

The lids are not microwave safe.

With clear rather than opaque lids, the Glasslock Assorted Oven Safe Container Set makes it easy to see what’s inside each container. We loved using the set to store produce like fresh fruit and lettuce.

Each container has a clasp on all four sides, so they sealed tightly and never leaked. The tight seal even kept a peeled avocado and butter lettuce fresh for three days in the refrigerator.

The set includes nine containers of varying sizes, so we never had trouble finding the right size to fit leftovers or store a lunch. The containers are made with a thick and durable glass, so we felt comfortable stacking several containers on top of each other.

We ran these containers through the dishwasher multiple times, and they cleaned up nicely without damaging the containers or lids. The containers are also microwave and oven safe, so you can reheat leftovers or cook a meal right in the container. However, the lids are made with plastic, so they aren’t safe to use in the microwave or oven.

The containers are completely leakproof and seal tightly to keep food fresh.

They aren’t designed for nesting or stacking.

The Pyrex FreshLock Glass Storage Set is our top choice for people who need a basic set of glass storage containers. It includes five containers in three different sizes, so you have enough options to store leftovers without overwhelming your cabinets with extra containers you won’t use.

We used the medium-sized containers to transport fresh fruit, vegetables, and snacks for picnics, and the small containers were ideal for storing ingredients for meal preparation. The large rectangular container was perfect for storing lunch or dinner leftovers.

Our leftovers stayed extremely fresh in these containers thanks to their tight seal, and we were shocked by how well a peeled avocado stayed fresh after three days in the fridge. We even froze fruit in the containers without it developing any freezer burn. The containers are also completely leak-proof, so we felt comfortable transporting salsa without it spilling or leaking from the container.

Made with tempered glass, the containers are durable and heat-resistant, so they can even be used in the oven. They are also dishwasher safe, but we found it was easy to hand wash them with dish soap and hot water. The containers and even the plastic lids resisted tough stains from blueberries, beets, and red sauce.

Keep in mind that the containers aren’t designed to be nested or stacked, so they require a bit of space to store. We made sure to store them carefully to avoid cracking the glass.

The containers are stackable and nestable for convenient storage.

The large container size is better suited for families or people who make large batches of food.

If you often make large batches of food at a time and need sizable containers to store the leftovers, the Razab Extra Large Glass Food Storage Containers are the best choice for you. The set includes three glass containers that are large enough that they can double as serving dishes for soups or salads.

All three of the containers are stackable and nestable for convenient storage, so they won’t take up too much space in your cabinets despite their large size. The containers have airtight lids that lock on all four sides to keep food fresh. We were impressed with the seal on the containers, which never leaked and even kept salad ingredients crisp and fresh for several days during testing.

We thought the containers were very sturdy and durable, and the borosilicate glass is safe to use in the oven, microwave, and freezer. While we loved the large size of these containers, they may be too large for small households or people who don’t make large batches of food.

The containers are very sturdy and stack nicely on top of one another.

Only one of the containers is large enough to store bigger portions of leftovers.

Stackable containers are ideal for kitchens with limited storage space, and we loved how easy it was to nest the OXO Good Grips Smart Seal containers in one another when we weren’t using them. The containers stacked well in the fridge, and we were able to nest them together to store in our cabinets.

We thought the 4-ounce containers were ideal for storing small ingredients or leftover sauces, and the round 1-cup containers were useful for holding spices or dry rubs.

The set also includes two slightly larger rectangular containers that we used to store small portions of leftovers or meal prep. However, we thought only one of the larger containers was big enough to store a significant amount of leftovers.

With a thick rubber seal, the lids are tight-fitting and kept our food fresh for several days. The lids also seemed very sturdy, and the borosilicate glass containers are durable enough to withstand harsh temperatures in the oven or freezer.

Since they are incredibly sturdy, the containers are also great for travel. We used them to bring leftovers to work, and they didn’t leak at all while traveling in the car or into the office.

The dish is large enough to cook a decent amount of food but slim enough to store easily.

The lid can be a bit tricky to wash by hand.

We loved the size of the Pyrex Glass Baking Dish because it was easy to stack on other containers in our cabinets, and the slim design allowed it to fit easily in the refrigerator. Although it was small enough to store easily, we could still bake large meals in the dish.

We used the baking dish to make several different dishes, including chicken, pasta, and vegetables, and we also stored the leftovers in the container. The container kept leftovers extremely fresh and didn’t cause any freezer burn when we used it in the freezer.

Best of all, the dish can go straight from the oven to the table and right into the fridge or freezer to store the leftovers. Since the dish is easily portable, we thought the container was perfect for bringing food to a group dinner or transporting a meal to a potluck.

Both the lid and the container are dishwasher safe, but we also found them easy to handwash in the sink. However, we had to pay special attention to make sure the crevices by the handles were clean when we washed the dish by hand.

After testing glass food storage containers at home for several weeks, we chose the Pyrex Simply Store Glass Food Storage Container Set as the best overall option. We loved the containers’ sturdy glass and stackable design that made them easy to store.

We tested 12 different glass food storage containers at home to find the best options for storing, reheating, freezing, or baking food. Throughout the testing period, we used the containers for a variety of purposes like meal prepping, storing leftovers and produce, and holding dry and wet ingredients.

Before using the containers, we checked to see which ones were safe to use in the microwave, dishwasher, oven, or freezer. We used the containers to heat food in the microwave, store food in the freezer, or cook meals in the oven if applicable. After each use, we washed the containers following the manufacturer’s instructions and ran them through the dishwasher if they were dishwasher safe.

To test the seal of the containers, we stored a peeled avocado in each container and left it in the fridge for three days. After three days, we checked the avocado for freshness. Then, we filled each container with water and shook them to see if water leaked through the lid.

Glass food storage containers are made with one of three types of glass: untreated, tempered, or borosilicate.

Untreated glass is the standard glass that is common in many household products. While it is the most affordable glass type, it's also less durable than other options. “Untreated glass has not gone through any additional process to make the glass stronger and is more likely to break,” Goldstein explains.

Tempered glass is a chemically treated glass that is more durable than standard glass. “Tempered glass is treated to make it stronger and is less likely to break and more durable for home kitchens,” Goldstein says.

Borosilicate glass is another chemically-treated material that is designed to withstand temperature changes. “Borosilicate is the most durable and the one I recommend because it is also heat resistant and super durable,” Goldstein says.

To choose the right container shape and size for your needs, consider the size of your microwave, refrigerator, or freezer. If you have limited space in the microwave or refrigerator where you will use the containers, opt for smaller containers or sets with a variety of sizes. “I like to buy sets that have an assortment of sizes that nest within each other to save space,” Goldstein says.

Glass food storage containers are very easy to clean and will last a long time with proper care. Many glass containers can be washed in the dishwasher, but you can always use hot water and dish soap. “I highly recommend getting ones that are dishwasher safe,” Goldstein says.

All of the containers on our list are dishwasher safe for easy care and cleaning. One exception is the OXO Good Grips Smart Seal Glass Container Set, which has lids that should be hand-washed.

We thought the Prep Naturals containers were very sturdy and ideal for meal prep or storing leftovers. However, they took up a lot of space in the dishwasher because they were a bit too large to fit in the plate slots. They also needed a lot of space when we stored them in our cabinet.

With a variety of container sizes, the Caraway Food Storage Container Set was extremely versatile for storing leftovers or holding ingredients. However, we noticed quite a bit of water spill out during the leak test, so they weren’t fully airtight. We also thought the lids were a bit difficult to open and close, and we wished the notches were a bit wider to make them easier to open.

We were impressed with the airtight seal on the Glasslock storage containers, which kept our food fresh for several days. The containers have a divider in the middle to separate different types of food, which was helpful for meal prepping or storing ingredients. However, we thought they were a bit difficult to clean because food sometimes got caught in the seal.

Glass food storage containers are easier to clean and have more versatile uses than plastic containers. “Most glass containers can be used in the microwave, freezer, and some in the oven depending on the temperature,” Goldstein says. Glass containers are also better for the environment and don’t hold onto odors as much as plastic.

Glass food storage containers range in price from around $25 for a budget set to $75 for a high-quality set with lots of pieces. The price depends on the number of pieces in the set and the type of glass, with borosilicate glass being the most expensive.

The most affordable container we recommend is the Pyrex Glass Baking Dish with Lid, which costs about $20 but only includes one large baking dish. The best value set on our list is the Amazon Basics 20-Piece Glass Food Storage Container Set, which costs about $35 and includes 10 different containers with lids.
